This tour involves a moderate hike to and from the Fagradalsfjall volcano, which can take up to two hours each way. The adventure begins with a pickup in Reykjavík, followed by a trek through lava fields covered in moss, leading to the Fagradalsfjall Volcano. This area is known for the thousands of earthquakes that formed multiple volcanoes in the Gelldingalur Valley. The tour showcases the rugged beauty of the Reykjanes Peninsula, offering an up-close experience of geothermal wonders, natural phenomena, and stunning landscapes. Participants will witness the volcanic eruption site, tectonic activity moving continents apart, and breathtaking scenery filled with unique geothermal features.

Along the way, you will explore remarkable sights including lava-surrounded fish hangars, the crystal-clear lake Kleifarvatn with its striking beaches, the Gunnuhver hot springs within the Krýsuvík geothermal area, and the Reykjanesviti lighthouse. The tour also visits coastal landmarks and the famous Bridge between Two Continents, where you can literally walk between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This volcanic and geothermal journey offers an extraordinary glimpse into Iceland’s dynamic natural forces and diverse landscapes, making it a thrilling experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Amazing stop, even if you don’t have time for the trails, the short walk to the lava field is breathtaking. We visited here May 15 around noon and found not many people. The weather was quite cloudy, & as usual you pay approx $10 CAD for parking. Informative map showing what volcano each lava field is from. Due to the weather we stopped at the very first one; found it amazing it was from 2021 and was still smoking in parts. Highly advised not to walk on because of this. If you have time and the weather is good the ridge trail is a steep climb up, and long, but I can only imagine the views would be other worldly. The trail seemed well maintained but if it’s windy, be careful! You can hear the intensity of it in the last video I post.

We received an alert about increased volcanic activity in Grindavík, warning of a possible eruption. Naturally, curiosity got the best of us, and we decided to check it out. The weather, however, had other plans strong winds, snow showers, and icy paths made the hike challenging. Despite the conditions, it was an incredible experience. The landscape was eerie yet breathtaking, and the sense of being near an active volcano added to the thrill. If you’re planning to visit, be prepared for slippery terrain. A hiking stick is highly recommended to keep your balance, especially in winter conditions. Stay alert, check safety updates, and enjoy the adventure!

Walk it at night! So amazing! It's harder at night as the paths are hard to see but as it was the last night we just had too! And amazingly we managed to see the northern lights up there!

Parking fee of 1000 ISK (paid by app). Easily accessible from main paved road. No washroom facilities, but there is a picnic table. Excellent spot to explore the lava fields. It is a bit further away from the volcano hike than P1 location. But overall, easy hike and very accessible. Highly recommend the stop!

Just a great experience to see gasses emitting from old lava flows and hiking up the hills to see the volcanoes Geldingadalir and Fagradalsfjall actively smoking as well. For to hike in the clouds and see the ocean as well. Just amazing views everywhere and you will also see different rock as you hike. Some parts are steep and can be unnerving, but worth the trip if you have enough courage.
