The Buda Castle District invites you on a graceful journey through time, where every cobblestone street and tranquil square holds echoes of a remarkable past. As you wander through this enchanting quarter with a knowledgeable local guide, you will gain a deep understanding of its historical importance, its long list of occupations, and the many roles it has played across the centuries of Hungarian heritage. From its earliest medieval foundations to its present cultural charm, each step reveals layers of stories waiting to be uncovered. The civic town of the district welcomes you with quiet elegance as your guide leads you past the National Archive, beneath the stately Vienna Gate, and around the dignified Buda Tower, offering insight into a world that has shaped the heart of the nation.
Your walk continues toward the breathtaking terraces of Fishermans Bastion, where sweeping views stretch across the river to the Parliament, Margaret Island, and the glistening waters of the Danube. Inside the magnificent Matthias Church, your guide shares its legends and meaningful coronation tales that have shaped royal history. You will then follow the serene promenade along the medieval city walls, opening toward the gentle curves of the Buda Hills, before arriving at the Palace area and its elegant courtyards. As the district unfolds, you will also pass by the stately residences of the prime minister and the president, and see the charming wooden funicular still operating along the hillside toward the Chain Bridge. This immersive journey brings the soul of old Budapest to life in a way that is both enriching and unforgettable.

We booked our tickets to visit The Church of Our Lady of Buda Castle (Matthias Church) online. The tickets are flexible with no fixed date, which is convenient. However, when we first went to visit, there was a wedding taking place, and the church was closed to visitors. We had to return the next day, so do keep that in mind if you’re buying tickets in advance — sometimes the church isn’t open to tourists due to private events. I’d highly recommend purchasing tickets online, as there’s usually quite a long queue at the counter. We also bought the audio guide along with our tickets, but the experience was a bit disappointing. It’s not a physical device — instead, it’s accessed through an online website by scanning a QR code and using a passcode provided by the staff. Since we didn’t have earphones with us, it wasn’t easy to listen. Also, the audio guide markers were difficult to match with the actual spots inside. Given the church’s rich historical significance, it would be great if they improved the audio guide experience to make it more engaging and user-friendly. The church itself is absolutely magnificent. The interiors are stunning — every wall is beautifully hand-painted, and the blue stained-glass windows are mesmerizing, each telling a unique story. There are side stairs that lead to the upper level, where you’ll find a area with different artifacts worth exploring. We visited about 1.3 hours before closing in the evening, and it was a wonderful experience — quiet, peaceful, and with very few people around. We spent around an hour inside, taking our time to admire the stunning interiors. Highly recommend visiting during that time if you prefer a calm atmosphere.

For me, this church is the second must-see in Budapest. Incredibly beautiful on the outside and very atmospheric inside. I recommend buying a ticket in advance, as the queues for tickets on-site are quite long. I recommend getting the audio guide on your smartphone. The total tour time is 1-1.5 hours. Always crowded, but you can see everything between group tours.

Matthias Church stands magnificently restored in pride of place at a high point of the Buda Castle hilltop site. It's gleaming white stone dazzles in strong sunlight with the polychrome roof tiles providing a colourful canopy. Restoration of castle buildings continues all around with cranes and workers moving above the tourist crowds and route deviations in place. The end result will be wonderful and will be worth a return visit in a few years.

This is a wonderful church and just looks beautiful from the outside and the inside. The facade matches the Fisherman’s Bastion which makes the entire structure look even more majestic. The walls within the church are beautifully painted. When visiting the church you have the opportunity to visit the top of the tower. It will take you some effort to get there. The view from the top is amazing. From the view of the parliament, the Fisherman’s Bastion to the beautiful ornate roof tiles, you will get to see it all. I highly recommend visiting this sight and recommend purchasing the tickets ahead of time.

We went here as the final stop on a tour and they saved the best time last. The city has so many beautiful buildings and this is certainly one of them. There is a great deal of history here as well as the space. I am not a religious person and I've been to a lot of basilicas, cathedrals and churches since I began visiting Europe some twenty years ago. I've become far more particular about what I visit after having been to so many. This was certainly worth the visit.

Anna, the lady who guided us through the church, was absolutely fantastic! She explained everything clearly and engagingly, was incredibly kind and helpful, and even helped us take some beautiful photos. It was a truly pleasant experience!

Anna gave a wonderful tour of the Buda Castle district and had many fascinating stories to share. It was raining the whole time, but Anna found locations with some shelter when speaking to the group so we weren’t exposed to the elements for the entire two hours. Anna gave some great recommendations for restaurants as well as other points of interest in the area. She was very kind to ride the funicular with several of us that had bad knees and were hesitant to do all of the steps and walking after the tour on the downhill trek. Thank you Anna!
