During their long history as border strongholds, both Alnwick and Warkworth served as residences of the powerful Percy family, the Earls of Northumberland. These lords played major roles in English history, even rising in rebellion against King Henry IV. The Anglo-Scottish border saw countless battles involving the Percys, who were locked in a fierce rivalry with the Douglas family of Scotland. Today, Alnwick Castle remains the home of the Percys and has been transformed into an impressive visitor attraction, complete with its world-famous poison garden. It is also well known for its film and television fame, most notably as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Warkworth Castle, the original Percy stronghold, sits dramatically in a curve of the River Coquet and offers a picturesque glimpse into medieval power and life in the North. This tour provides a fascinating journey into the world of influential noble families, their struggles, and their legacy, while allowing you to enjoy two of Northumberland’s most iconic castles in a single day.

The best of all castles in Northumberland. Very happy memories of being here as a bairn (child.) It looks like a proper castle, lots of history and i love it.

Sadly, the main building inside the castle is closed for renovation, but the good news is that this means tickets are half price at the moment. You still get a decent amount of an amazing castle to explore, with access to some higher sections, inside towers and the bakery, great hall and well areas. The castle was still in use within living memory but is not lived in any more. It is a great place to visit. The Bloomberg Connects app has a great audio/visual guide to the castle, which includes interviews from someone whose family worked in the castle. It’s free and interesting.

Historic castle close to the town. Impressive ruined castle with plenty to explore. Good signage with information boards covering the historic events and uses of the castle.

Nice castle to visit especially if your part of the English Heritage as its free parking and entry. Quite alot of the castle remaining so plenty to look around. Also nice to walk down into the village with cafes and a few shops to visit. Overall well worth a visit.

An excellent ruin of a castle. We were lucky enough to have birds of prey showing as we arrived. Wonderful to see and hear about the birds. The is parking at the castle. You have to pay £3.50 for parking unless you are a national trust member. This is normal for national trust sites. There were toilets in the car park but they are not looked after the best. Lots of cobwebs and dirt and no soap in the toilets. It normally shuts at 5 during the summer months but the staff were very much rushing to shut up from half 4. This is the reason for the 4 star review the actual castle was 5 star. Plenty of areas to explore and learn about. Lots of information boards and voice boards around the site. The main building was amazing with lots of rooms and stairs to explore. The gift shop was small, however there was a tent which had more things in but this shut very early and we were not able to look around before we left. We do like to take souvenirs away with the sites name on.
