Begin your Sofia city tour with a visit to the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the area, Boyana Church. Though small and requiring only about 30 minutes to explore, its remarkable frescoes have made a lasting impact on the history of art worldwide. Next, head to the National History Museum, which takes you through 14 centuries of Bulgaria’s rich and complex past.
By midday, pause for a delicious meal at a charming secret restaurant established in 1927. Over lunch, engage in conversation about Bulgaria’s history—from the Ottoman period and Communist Soviet era to its role in World Wars I and II—making the experience both educational and immersive.
In the afternoon, continue with a visit to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the largest church in the Balkans, before descending into the Byzantine-era catacombs of St. Sofia Church. Stroll through the city center, discovering the Russian Church, the National Theater and its gardens, the Rotunda of St. George, and the well-preserved Roman remains. Conclude your walk at the Banya Bashi Mosque, where you can explore the Museum of the History of Sofia, the historic Hall’s Market, and nearby thermal springs. This tour offers a rich blend of art, history, architecture, and culture, providing a comprehensive experience of Bulgaria’s capital.

Emma

We did the monastery and spa springs trip with Philippe. He was an outstanding guide and went deep into Bulgarian history and brought a fresh approach to the spiritual history as well. Our tour was one of the best parts of the whole trip and I highly recommend- particularly with this guide!
Lisa

Amazing trip! Phillip was awesome. Definitely the best way to go if you’re wanting to have a day trip out of Sofia that’s both in nature and relaxing. The pools were great - I only used the hot pool because I preferred less chlorine. The monastery was lovely. Our guide took us somewhere special and we had less time at the monastery which was perfect because the extra stop was so special - the cave where St John lived. Phillips passion, friendliness and attunement to us and our needs was top level and I wouldn’t recommend going anywhere else. Thank you thank you!!! BYO towel, food at pools is okay, bring cash for deposits at pool, monastery also only takes cash for souvenirs

Philip was an amazing tour guide. We had a lovely small group. Philip was very educational, we really learned a lot! We went to Serbia and Macedonia. He was so much fun! We actually booked it the day before, and there were only 5 of us in the group. HIGHLY suggest this tour group, so reasonably priced for what you get! Do it!!!
