Embark on a full-day adventure from Zanzibar City (Stone Town) and discover some of the island’s most fascinating historical and cultural sites. Begin your journey by exploring three of the sultanate’s enchanting forts, each reflecting the rich history and architectural heritage of Zanzibar. Continue inland to the ancient capital of Unguja, where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant local life and wander through the bustling towns, including the famous Darajani Spice Market and the scenic Forodhani Gardens. These stops provide a unique opportunity to experience the island’s heritage, taste local flavors, and witness traditional crafts and daily life.
The adventure continues with a boat trip to the historic Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, where you can encounter the giant Aldabra tortoises that have made the island their home. Stroll along the pristine beaches, enjoy the serene surroundings, and learn about the island’s intriguing history as a former quarantine station and prison. This full-day tour offers a perfect blend of culture, history, and natural beauty, giving travelers a deep and memorable experience of Zanzibar beyond the city.

Pascal

The excursion got off to a bad start with $22 in taxes per person, listed in tiny print as "not included." Despite a very kind and knowledgeable guide, Prison Island was completely uninteresting: a single room with a few gemstones, a shop, and a reserve of large, motionless turtles. Next, we headed to Nakupenda, where we were dropped off and herded like cattle. The photos of the site are misleading, both in terms of the scenery and the meal. The place could be paradise, but it's completely ruined by the large influx of tourists and poor organization. Swimming was only allowed an hour after a meal consisting of rice, fries, inedible octopus, dry chicken, and slipper lobsters, served on a plastic plate with a single fork. The fruit after swimming, meant to keep the "sheep" (a local term for the group) close to the boat and ready to leave, was tasty but insufficient. A disappointing experience that we strongly advise against.
Victor

There is a huge selection of boat services to the island. Safe. Fun. Kind.

This place is very beautiful

The island is very small, and you can only see a glimpse of what was once a prison/quarantine site for those with yellow fever. Then there's the turtle sanctuary, but to be honest, I prefer to see them diving or snorkeling in the wild.
