This place is ridiculously crowded, on some janky weed bed that’s barely 5ft at the deepest part. I literally was yelled at by some other guide from some other tour group about picking up a shell while snorkeling. Apparently that’s frowned upon and the guide from some other group made a point to physically yell and curse me out in Spanish. I’ve been diving since 1994 & literally all over the world (from Guam, Hawaii, all over the Caribbean). and never been treated to this degree. I appreciate and respect rules if they are made clear, however no one once said to not pick up shells while swimming with the turtles. The “incident” could have and should have been handled much differently and I would have a different perspective of the place. Even my 8yo daughter got bored and was ready to go back after the first 15min. 2/10 would not recommend. There are much much better places to respectfully visit & swim with turtles.
We took a private tour of the Tulum ruins and cenote swim with Ricardo. He ferried us quickly and safely between the sites and our hotel. Our guide in Tulum was Beto, an indigenous Mayan. Very knowledgeable about the history of the ruins. Then it was off to the cenote at Dos Ojos. Ricardo was kind enough to loan me a GoPro so I could photograph and video underwater. He let us swim by ourselves because we had been to this cenote previously and knew our way around. Definitely worth the price.
Diving into the beautiful waters of Akumal with the local cooperativa, Nado con Tortugas, was an experience I’ll cherish forever, especially because of our incredible dive guide, Philippe. From the moment we started, it was clear we were in for a treat. Philippe wasn't just a guide; he was a master at making the adventure personal and unforgettable. Philippe's expertise and passion for marine life shone through in every aspect of our swim. He had an uncanny ability to find turtles and get us up close for some truly stunning photos, all while ensuring we maintained a respectful distance to these majestic creatures. His respect for the ocean and its inhabitants added a deeply enriching layer to our experience. But it wasn’t just his professional skills that made the day so special; it was Philippe's personality. He was super nice, incredibly funny, and genuinely sweet, making our time not only educational but filled with laughter and joy. His friendly and welcoming demeanor made us feel at ease from the get-go, turning a simple activity into a memorable adventure. For anyone looking to swim with turtles in Akumal, I can’t recommend Philippe and the local cooperativa enough. Thanks to Philippe, we didn’t just see turtles; we experienced a slice of the ocean’s magic, guided by someone who truly loves and understands it. The experience was beyond what I had hoped for, leaving me not only with amazing photos but with memories that will last a lifetime.
Yesterday me and my partner visited Akumal to swim with the Turtles. We were excited but also apprehensive about this for a few reasons. First of all we are both quite scared of open water. I was also nervous to see how the area was run and how the animals were cared for there. The first thing I will says is how amazing the staff were to members of their group. They give you clear hand signals so that they can alert you when a specific type of animal is near you so that you can try to spot it. They even have little rings that they attach to themselves so the less confident and weaker swimmers can hold onto it an they will pull you around to give them the best chance of seeing the animals without panicking. The amount of respect and love the guides have for these animals is also amazing. You are clearly told to not touch or swim too close to the animals so that they are unharmed or unaffected by anyone. I was so happy to see that the animals were treat with so much love and care by the staff that work there. This ensures that the turtles stay in the bay for us as tourists to be able to enjoy without actually affecting the Turtles so that they can live a natural and normal life. I am truly blown away by this place and when I'm next in Mexico I WILL be coming to Akumal again. Anyone who is unsure please please go. You will not regret it
This was an amazing experience!! Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. We had a small group of just my husband and I paired with another couple. It was perfect! We easily kept up with our guide and ended up seeing five different turtles! Plus a sting ray and some squid. Best experience of our entire week. Loved it!! Note: the stand is currently on the left/ north side of the road as you are getting off the highway exit. It opens at 9am, and they aren’t there much before that. We drove right past it and missed it a couple times. Just follow the directions on your tour ticket/info email. (We also went in January and the water was pretty chilly, but it was still so worth it!)
