Begin your exploration of Monschau, a charming German town near the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands, starting in the Old Town where timbered houses, cozy cafes, and cobblestone streets create a picturesque setting. Wander past the historic Burg Monschau, a castle dating back to the 13th century, and step into the 18th century Rotes Haus, or Red House, a famous landmark that once served as a lavish residence and corporate headquarters for the Scheibler family, renowned in the textile industry. Continue your stroll past the Felsenkeller Brauhaus & Museum, a 150-year-old brewery showcasing an impressive collection of bottles and jugs from around the world. Admire the Rathaus, or City Hall, built on a site with a rich history dating back to 1654, before concluding your visit at the Senfmühle Monschau, a family-owned mustard mill that has been operating for over a century. Your journey begins in front of Aachen Cathedral, where you will embark on a two-hour guided tour of this historic German city, enjoying its unique blend of medieval charm, cultural landmarks, and local heritage.

Visiting Burg Monschau feels a bit like stepping straight into a medieval time capsule — with a few surprises mixed in. Perched above the half-timbered town, the castle watches over Monschau like it has for centuries, and the short uphill walk is totally worth the burn (and the view!). Let’s start with the vibe — it’s not a flashy, perfectly restored fairytale castle like some in Germany. Instead, it’s rugged, atmospheric, and a little mysterious, with thick stone walls and quiet courtyards that whisper old stories. There’s not much inside in terms of exhibitions — unless you visit during one of the cultural events or open-air concerts that the town hosts up here in summer. When those are on, this place comes alive with music echoing through the valley. The views, though, are the real reward. From the top, you get a breathtaking panorama of Monschau — those crooked roofs, the narrow alleys, and the river curling below like a ribbon. It’s especially magical in the late afternoon when the sun hits the red roofs just right. Accessibility can be tricky (it’s a steep climb and not ideal for wheelchairs or strollers), but if you’re up for a little effort, it’s absolutely worth it. Well it’s free to access. That’s always a plus

The town of Monschau is really beautiful and calm. The castle was also very interesting to see.

You will find a wholesome experience of the scene from the castle.

The castle is beautiful, and the view of the city from up there is impressive! You can visit it for free, you just need to go up a few steps to get there from the city center. Our dog had a lot of fun!

It was a small and nice hike to the Burg (Castle). I really liked the way it has been preserved. It would be great if they open the entrance to go atop the castle. I just have one issue - why no boards explaining the heritage of this castle? It would attract more tourists and make the whole experience even better. Overall, I feel it's worth the climb and perfect location for one day trips with friends and family.
