Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park: A Subterranean World of Ancient Wonders

Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park stands as one of Vietnam’s most extraordinary natural treasures, renowned globally for its vast limestone cave systems and exceptional geological value. Home to more than 300 caves and grottoes, the park is best known for Phong Nha Cave, widely celebrated by the British Caving Association for its remarkable scale and unique natural features. These include the longest underground river, some of the highest and most extensive cave passages, and expansive underground sandy beaches, all adorned with stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations.

The park’s reputation was further elevated following major discoveries made by British cave explorers in 2009, when 20 new caves were documented, extending over 56 kilometers in total. Among these findings was Thien Duong (Paradise Cave), recognized as one of the world’s largest and most breathtaking cave systems. These explorations continue to highlight the immense scale and complexity of the region’s underground landscape.

Beyond its visual grandeur, Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng holds immense scientific importance. UNESCO has identified its karst formations as some of the oldest in Asia, with geological development dating back approximately 400 million years to the Paleozoic era. This ancient limestone system offers researchers invaluable insight into Earth’s geological evolution, including processes of formation, erosion, and long-term environmental change.
