Etna Craters Sunset Adventure
Discover the dramatic northern slopes of Mount Etna on a scenic sunset adventure from Piano Provenzana Etna North. Starting at 1800 meters, the experience combines a 4x4 journey, volcanic landscapes, short walks, and panoramic views from the higher slopes of Europe’s largest active volcano.
Travel aboard a special 4x4 vehicle along the panoramic mountain road toward the summit area. Along the way, stop to see the remains of the Le Betulle hotel, the only visible structure left from the lava flow of the 2002 eruption. Continue to the 2002 eruption craters at around 2000 meters.
The journey then reaches the historic Umberto and Margherita craters at approximately 2380 meters. Enjoy a short trek along the edge of these enormous extinct craters before continuing toward the Pizzi Deneri volcanic observatory at 2818 meters. A guided 15 minute hike leads to a panoramic point at 2850 meters.
Weather permitting, enjoy spectacular views across the Aeolian Islands, Ionian coast, Giardini Naxos, Syracuse, Taormina, and Calabria. From this elevated viewpoint, watch the sunset while looking toward Etna’s summit craters and the Valle del Bove. After sunset, return to Piano Provenzana by 4x4 vehicle.
