Etna Crater Trail Experience
Discover the dramatic landscape created by the 2002 eruption on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The three hour trekking experience begins at Piano Provenzana at approximately 1800 meters. After check in, follow an easy trail through a beautiful beech forest toward the craters responsible for one of the most significant eruptions on Etna's northern side.
The route continues alongside the 2002 lava flow, offering close views of the volcanic landscape and its distinctive formations. Guests cross the lava flow and follow a scenic trail beside the lava channel. This deep canyon was shaped by the enormous movement of magma that entered and partly destroyed the centuries old Ragabo Pine Forest.
Continue around the full perimeter of the eruptive cones while taking in the impressive surroundings. The trail provides an opportunity to understand how volcanic activity transformed the landscape and created new geological features. The experience combines gentle trekking with fascinating views of Etna's powerful natural forces.
After completing the circuit around the craters, return along the trail toward Piano Provenzana. The excursion operates throughout the year, while winter departures can be completed with snowshoes when conditions require them. Telescopic poles, trekking shoes, and a windbreaker are available for guests who need them.
