Silver Splash Sea Kayaking Bellingham
Silver Splash Essentials of Sea Kayaking is designed to help seniors develop the basic skills needed for safe and confident solo paddling on Bellingham Bay. Offered by the Community Boating Center in partnership with the Whatcom Council on Aging, the program creates an accessible and supportive introduction to sea kayaking.
The class begins on land, where participants learn about essential kayaking equipment, paddle strokes, boat preparation and cold water safety. Students also learn how to dress safely for cold water immersion and prepare their kayaks before heading onto the water.
On the water, participants practice paddling, boat maneuvering and safety communication. The course also introduces wet exits and deep water self rescue techniques. Instructors provide guidance during these activities, helping students build confidence with essential emergency skills.
After completing the class, participants gain the skills needed to rent Community Boating Center sea kayaks. The program is designed for older adults, with equipment and activities planned for accessibility. Scholarship support is available for participants who need financial assistance. Cancellations more than three weeks ahead receive a full refund, one to three weeks receive a 50 percent refund, and cancellations under one week receive no refund.
