Youth Sailing Development Bellingham
The Sailing Development Team is designed for students in grades three through seven who want to learn sailing while becoming part of a welcoming community. This nine week program meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 pm to 7 pm and focuses on building confidence skills and positive experiences on the water.
Participants develop essential sailing knowledge through practical instruction and regular time on the boat. The program introduces basic seamanship sailing techniques and cold water safety while encouraging sailors to challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment. Students also learn how to work together communicate clearly and build self awareness.
Racing is introduced as part of the program with an emphasis on sportsmanship teamwork and enjoyment. Sailors can develop a healthy approach to recreational competition while motivated participants may have opportunities to join regional regattas. The program aims to build skills that can support continued sailing throughout their future.
Safety and suitable clothing are important throughout the program. Sailors must wear a lifejacket with a whistle and may need wetsuits on certain days. Proper cold water gear is strongly recommended. When weather prevents sailing the team continues with workouts and cardio activities so participants should always be ready for running.
