Beginner Dinghy Sailing Bellingham

Beginner Dinghy Sailing is designed for people with little or no sailing experience who want to learn the basics in a safe and practical setting. The course is suitable for participants aged 16 and above and offers either four three hour sessions or two six hour sessions.

Training takes place aboard 14 foot RS Quest dinghies with two to three students in each boat. Instructors monitor the group from a safety boat and adjust activities according to conditions, comfort, and skill levels. Participants spend around half of each session on the water.

The course covers essential sailing skills including boat setup, launching, steering, tacking, jibing, sail trim, crew movement, weight placement, and sailing upwind and downwind. Students also learn cold water safety, person overboard recovery, docking techniques, and capsize recovery.

A capsize drill is part of the practical training and is strongly recommended, although participation is not required. Capsize recovery is also part of the Skills Test needed for independent boat rentals. The course is ideal for beginners who are comfortable getting wet while building confidence and practical sailing skills.
