Manchester, New Hampshire, is bringing its Black business history into focus with a walking tour exploring the stories of entrepreneurs who built businesses, created opportunities, and strengthened their communities despite barriers of racism and exclusion. Led by Sankofa Scholars Nur Shoop and Barbara Ward, the experience examines how economic independence became an important part of Black freedom and self determination.
The tour traces a long tradition of entrepreneurship, beginning with Black barbers, caterers, and tradespeople in the early nineteenth century. Participants will discover how these early business owners used their skills and determination to establish livelihoods while contributing to the growth and character of their communities.
The story continues through the generations, highlighting dry cleaners, beauty salons, neighborhood businesses, and multicultural enterprises that helped shape Manchester. The tour also explores New Hampshire’s pioneering Black business owners and their connections to broader African traditions of commerce, craftsmanship, and innovation.
Scheduled for Friday, October 23 at 10:00 AM, the tour costs $40 per person and departs from Manchester, with the exact location to be determined. Each tour requires at least 20 participants. If that number is not reached, guests will be notified at least 48 hours in advance and may receive a full refund or transfer to another tour. All tours depart from Manchester.
