Never Caught: The Washingtons and Ona Marie Judge
A powerful historical journey will explore the extraordinary story of Ona Marie Judge, a young woman enslaved by George and Martha Washington who courageously chose freedom rather than remain in bondage. Led by Sankofa Scholar Sonya Arroyo, the Portsmouth tour brings her remarkable story to life through the places and communities connected to her escape and new life.
The journey follows Ona’s escape in the spring of 1796 from the Washingtons’ executive mansion in Philadelphia. With support from Philadelphia’s free Black community, she traveled north to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she established a new life while facing the continuing threat of capture.
As participants travel through Portsmouth’s historic streets and waterfront, they will discover Ona’s connections to prominent families including the Langdons, Whipples, and Lears. The tour also examines President Washington’s efforts to recapture her and highlights the networks of resistance, courage, and community that helped protect her freedom.
The tour departs from Manchester, New Hampshire, with the meeting location to be determined. A minimum of twenty participants is required for the tour to operate. If fewer participants register, guests will be notified at least forty eight hours in advance and may receive a full refund or transfer to another tour. The tour costs fifty five dollars per person, with no discounts currently offered.
