Beginner Keelboat Sailing in Bellingham
Beginner Keelboat Sailing is designed for adults and older teens who want to learn the fundamentals of sailing. The course is suitable for ages 16 and above and requires no previous sailing experience. Across four four hour sessions, participants learn sailing theory, wind awareness, boat handling, and basic navigation.
The training takes place almost entirely on the water in Bellingham Bay. Students practice taking the helm, trimming sails, and using wind direction to control the boat. The course focuses on building practical skills and confidence with the long term goal of preparing participants to skipper a boat independently.
Each class maintains a four to one student instructor ratio, allowing instructors to provide focused guidance based on individual learning needs. The course follows US Sailing standards and is taught by certified instructors through an accredited US Sailing Center.
No prerequisites are required for the course. Participants should be prepared to spend most of each session aboard the boat. A Basic Keelboat textbook is recommended before starting the course, as familiarizing yourself with sailing concepts can help maximize practical learning time. A skills test may also be conducted during the course at the instructors discretion.
