Kent Goat Keeping Course
A six day practical goat keeping course offers aspiring smallholders the knowledge and hands on skills needed to start and care for their own herd. Each training day lasts six hours and combines theory with practical farm activities. Designed for participants aged 16 and above, the course covers goat welfare, legislation, housing, feeding, handling, and health care while building confidence through real farm experience.
The first weeks introduce essential goat management practices. Participants learn about animal welfare, registration, movements, record keeping, nutrition, accommodation, bedding, and cleaning. Practical sessions cover feeding and housing, followed by goat handling and safe movement. Regular assessments help participants demonstrate their understanding and practical abilities.
Later training focuses on goat health and seasonal care. Participants study routine health checks, preventative treatments, foot care, parasite control, and vaccination. Seasonal activities may include bringing goats in from fields, foot bathing, and parasite prevention. Depending on the time of year, the final week focuses on either kidding or mating and introduces important care routines for nanny goats, kids, and billies.
The course takes place on a real smallholding and is taught by experienced smallholders and their team. Participants can work toward a recognised City and Guilds Technical Certificate in goat husbandry, handling, and health. The course requires physical participation and is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Participants should bring lunch, wellies, and waterproof clothing.
