Hillsborough Castle: Royal Heritage and Historic Gardens

Hillsborough Castle stands as the official royal residence in Northern Ireland and has played a remarkable role in both royal and political history. The grand family home welcomes members of the Royal Family during visits to the region, while its rooms have also hosted important political discussions. Its royal connection began in 1933 when Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, visited the castle.

The castle became particularly significant during the twentieth century, with Princess Elizabeth making her first solo visit to Northern Ireland in 1946. Hillsborough later became an important political retreat during the Peace Process, hosting numerous negotiations and discussions. In 1985, the State Drawing Room witnessed the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Irish Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald.

The castle’s historic importance continued during the negotiations surrounding Northern Ireland’s future. Numerous formal and informal discussions held at Hillsborough in 1998 contributed to the developments that ultimately led to the Good Friday Agreement. Today, visitors can experience the atmosphere of a royal residence while discovering the fascinating stories behind some of Northern Ireland’s most significant political moments.

Beyond the castle, Hillsborough’s magnificent gardens provide a peaceful escape across 100 acres of parkland and landscaped grounds. Developed from the 1760s onwards, the gardens combine formal ornamental spaces with woodland, meadows, waterways and picturesque glens. The four-acre Walled Garden is particularly impressive, while specimen trees and rare plants add further interest for visitors exploring this tranquil royal landscape.
