Svartisen Glacier, Norway’s second largest glacier, offers a breathtaking experience that combines raw natural beauty with rich cultural history. Spanning over 370 square kilometers and divided into eastern and western parts since the 1770s, Svartisen stretches across the municipalities of Rana, Meløy, and Rødøy. Its unique accessibility—particularly the Engenbreen arm, which lies just 20–30 meters above sea level—makes it a must-visit for adventurers and nature lovers alike. One of the best ways to experience this glacier is through a guided hike to the Austerdalsisen arm. Starting at Svartisvatnet, participants take a boat across the lake before enjoying a scenic 3 km hike to the glacier’s edge. Along the way, guides share stories of the glacier’s dramatic past and the legendary figures like Karl Johan Westermark who made it their summer home. With a lunch break near the glacier and views that will stay with you for a lifetime, this five-hour excursion offers a truly unforgettable journey into one of Europe’s most striking landscapes.
