Spencer Glacier Kayaking Tour Combines Rail Journey and Wilderness Adventure

In partnership with the Alaska Railroad, the Spencer Glacier kayaking experience offers travelers a rare opportunity to explore one of Alaska’s most remote glacier environments. The journey begins aboard a scenic train departing from Anchorage or Girdwood, passing through the rugged landscapes of the Kenai Mountains and Chugach National Forest before reaching the off-road Spencer Whistle Stop.

The rail route itself is an integral part of the adventure, offering sweeping views of alpine peaks, braided rivers, and distant glaciers. As the train travels deeper into the wilderness south of Turnagain Arm and Portage Valley, passengers experience a gradual transition from coastal scenery to remote glacial terrain, setting the tone for the day ahead.

Upon arrival at Spencer Lake, guests begin a guided kayaking excursion across calm waters filled with floating ice and striking blue glacier formations. A naturalist guide leads the experience, offering insights into glacial processes while allowing the group to paddle at a relaxed and adaptable pace suitable for varying energy levels.

The half-day journey provides close interaction with icebergs and pristine wilderness, including opportunities to observe and gently touch ancient ice. With minimal crowds and a focus on environmental immersion, the experience delivers a peaceful and personal connection to Alaska’s glacial landscapes, where shifting light, color, and sound create a constantly evolving natural spectacle.
