Ruhr’s Emscher Landscape Park Cycling Tour Showcases Industrial Heritage and Green Transformation

Germany’s Ruhr region is offering cyclists an expansive guided tour through the Emscher Landscape Park, a vast green corridor often referred to as the “Central Park of the Ruhr.” Spanning more than 500 square kilometres, the area represents over ten percent of the region and has been transformed from an industrial heartland into a connected network of parks, waterways, and cycling paths. The experience highlights how post-industrial landscapes can be repurposed into recreational and cultural spaces.

The guided cycling route stretches approximately 35 to 40 kilometres, making use of former railway lines that now serve as smooth, traffic-free pathways. This design allows participants to traverse the region safely while experiencing a continuous blend of natural scenery and industrial heritage. Riders are accompanied by a detailed guidebook that provides historical context, local anecdotes, and practical insights throughout the journey.

Key landmarks along the route include the UNESCO-listed Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, the striking Schurenbachhalde featuring a sculpture by Richard Serra, and the landscaped Nordsternpark. The tour also passes the Rhine-Herne Canal, the Emscher River, traditional farm cafés, historic worker settlements, and the imaginative installation known as the “stairway to heaven,” each adding layers of cultural and visual interest.

Despite its length and diversity, the route is carefully designed to minimize road crossings, ensuring a largely uninterrupted cycling experience.
