Fall Scenic Train Journey Brings Autumn Colors Along Grande Ronde River

A scenic rail journey through northeastern Oregon is drawing attention for its relaxed pace and sweeping views of autumn color along the Grande Ronde River. Departing from Elgin Depot, the historic train winds through a landscape filled with vibrant foliage, flowing water, and quiet wilderness, offering passengers a peaceful way to experience the region’s seasonal transformation.

The route follows the river toward Rondowa, where the Grande Ronde meets the Wallowa River, creating a striking natural confluence surrounded by forested hills and changing leaves. After briefly continuing along the Wallowa River, the train reverses direction, allowing travelers to enjoy the scenery from both perspectives as it returns to Elgin.
