Harold Porter Zigzag Trail Hike Showcases Kogelberg Biosphere’s Natural Beauty

Cape Town A guided hiking experience beginning at the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden is offering visitors a scenic and moderately challenging ascent into one of South Africa’s most biologically rich landscapes. The route follows the Zigzag Trail, climbing steadily from coastal gardens into the rugged mountain terrain above Betty’s Bay.

The trail gains approximately 450 meters in elevation as it moves away from cultivated botanical areas into the untouched wilderness of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. This UNESCO-protected region is widely recognised as a core part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and is celebrated for its extraordinary plant diversity and ecological importance.

As hikers progress, the landscape opens to expansive views of the Atlantic coastline, including sweeping vistas over Betty’s Bay and surrounding sandstone cliffs. The route, spanning roughly 8–9 kilometres round trip, offers a balanced combination of effort and reward, typically completed in around four hours including rest stops.

Organisers note that the hike is particularly suited to nature enthusiasts, photographers, and active families with older children. With seasonal streams, abundant birdlife, and endemic fynbos species along the path, the experience provides a quieter alternative to more frequented hiking routes near Cape Town.
