Betty’s Bay Zigzag Trail Hike – Harold Porter Garden to Kogelberg Border

This guided hike begins inside the beautiful Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, a lush coastal reserve known for its waterfalls, forested paths, and rich diversity of plant life. From here, the Zigzag Trail steadily climbs the mountain slopes, offering a moderately challenging ascent with around 450 meters of elevation gain. As the route leaves the cultivated gardens behind, hikers transition into wild, untouched fynbos within the UNESCO-protected Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, widely regarded as one of the most biodiverse regions in the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Along the way, the trail opens up to sweeping views over Betty's Bay, the Atlantic coastline, and dramatic sandstone cliffs that define the landscape. The full hike covers approximately 8–9 km round trip and takes about four hours including breaks, making it a rewarding experience for nature lovers, photographers, and active families with older children. With seasonal streams, abundant birdlife, and an incredible variety of endemic plant species, the route offers a peaceful and immersive alternative to the busier trails around Cape Town.
