The Cheese experience in Altamura. This is the definition of a family owned & operated cheese business. The family has been making cheese from this shop since 1930 and is now being run by the grandchildren. Our tour today is set with Vito, who together with his brothers & sisters carry on the family business. To say that this is a cheese tasting tour would be a major understatement. This experience would be better described as a life lesson built around great cheese that includes history, tradition, family, dedication, artisanship, culture, humor, entrepreneurship, human connection and kindness. We began the day in the cheese shop where we met Vito and his siblings (two brother and two sisters). The shop itself is unassuming, the kind of place where the locals go and people know you by your first name. In back of the shop is their small one room production facility, managed by one of the brothers Paulo, who demonstrates how the fresh cheeses are produced. After a hearty sampling (first course) of fresh cheeses straight from the production line, we are led on a walking tour of the city by Desire who is one of the funniest and most interesting people. She’s in her third year of medical school and helps out the family as her side gig because she enjoys the experience of family, community and meeting new people. Her personality, perspective & humor kept us laughing the entire day. Later in the day, we met up with Vito and his wife for lunch at his restaurant, which is tucked away in the forest/park outside of town. The lunch (a true feast) was all about how quality cheeses complement every dish. After lunch Vito sat with us over coffee and shared his story of growing up as the restless brother who left home to work abroad but was drawn back to the family business. Vito explained how he introduced blue-cheese to the family craft mix which has since become a best-seller in the shop and a walking tour of the town which also attracted celebrity attention with visits by Anthony Bourdain and Stanley Tucci. Vito also setup the new restaurant with his wife to complement the cheese production. By the end of the day, we realized that we had been treated to something more than a tasting tour, we had experienced a healthy serving of life and human connection with a side of cheese. Insider tip: on the day of the tour, skip breakfast and prepare to be treated to a feast.

We just returned from a family trip to Puglia & Rome. Visiting this incredible shop was my #1 highlight! I was beyond impressed with the cheese but what made it such a memorable experience was spending time with the owners during an impromptu tasting, learning all about their craft and the expert farming/culinary community behind the product. Thank you again to the team for accommodating our large group - a quick shopping stop turned into an improvised picnic and cheese class! Our hosts were fantastic, especially with kids. We left with a super cute custom cooler full of cheese and our unexpected favorite: the yogurt. I highly recommend a visit - for me, this was the best food experience of the entire vacation.

Nice little shop carrying a large variety of freshly made cheeses. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.

I loved the enthusiasm and kindness of the people of the South. The store owner and the customers who visited the store spoke English for us and cared for us. The taste of the cheese here was wonderful, and it was an unforgettable feeling and kindness to me and my husband !!! Make sure to taste fresh mozzarella, Ricotta and Pecorino cheese here!!!!!! I love it!!!! AMAZING😍😍

This is my second visit and it’s better then I remember. My favorite items are the yogurt Gorgonzola and the Scamorza. We also purchased a kilo of the mozzarella which of course was wonderful and delicious. The staff here are kind and friendly. The place is well run and efficient. Never a long wait and if you do not air it’s well worth it! Highly recommended!
