Our experiential tour invites you to dive into the authentic culinary traditions of Matera with a hands-on bread-making workshop, set within a bakery that has been passed down through four generations. The experience begins with an engaging introduction to the bakery's history and the carefully selected ingredients used in their craft, including high-quality local semolina and a natural sourdough starter. You'll then step into the heart of the workshop, where a master baker will guide you through the entire bread-making process—kneading the dough, allowing it to proof, shaping it by hand, and stamping it with the iconic mark that makes Matera bread so distinctive.
The highlight of the workshop is the chance to create your very own loaf of bread, a hands-on moment that brings tradition to life. Once baked, you’ll take your loaf home as a warm, delicious souvenir. The experience concludes with a relaxed tasting session in a cozy setting, where you’ll sample local delicacies and enjoy the rich flavors that define the region’s food culture. More than just a class, this workshop is an immersive journey into Matera’s culinary soul—perfect for food lovers and curious travelers alike.

I had the best experience in Matera at this bakery! Patrizia and her sisters are the best and they welcomed me with open arms and let me sign up for an amazing bread-making lesson I'll never forget! I also learned about the history of the famous Matera bread, and we had a tasting of different focaccia, wine, and pastries. I will be back to try everything in this bakery!

My favorite bakery in Matera, tradition meeting the modern approach. We did a bread experience with a group from Canada and USA, it helps to understand better the story of Matera. Love to see 2 woman/2 sisters, Patrizia e Sabrina running this bakery, it is refreshing. My favorite is the focaccia with sausage, peperone crusco, cime di rapa and the bread of course. Can’t wait to come back! Grazie

It is a must stop to have local pastries cooked at premises. You can see the oven at the back of the store. I got some filled qith chocolate, berries and apricot

I only tried the focaccia with tomatoes, which they heated up for me. It was very good. They also sell many interesting cookies and other baked goods. The service was also great and the lady who helped us was attentive and polite.

Panificio Il Forno di Gennaro: A Must-Visit in Matera for Bread Lovers. If you're looking for an authentic taste of Matera, look no further than Panificio Il Forno di Gennaro. This family-run bakery has been serving up delicious bread and traditional Lucanian products for generations. We recently had the pleasure of participating in a tasting at the bakery, and we were blown away by the quality and flavor of the food. We started with a selection of different types of bread, including the famous Pane di Matera DOP, which is made with semolina flour from local durum wheat. The bread was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, and it had a wonderful nutty flavor. We also tried a variety of other traditional products, such as taralli (savory crackers), friselle (twice-baked bread), stuffed focaccia and biscotti (cookies). All of the products were made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and they were absolutely delicious. In addition to the amazing food, we also had the pleasure of meeting Patrizia, Denisa, Anna, and Sabrina, the lovely women who run the bakery. They were all so warm and welcoming, and they were passionate about sharing their love of bread with us. We learned so much about the history of bread making in Matera, and we left the bakery feeling like we had made new friends. If you're in Matera, I highly recommend stopping by Panificio Il Forno di Gennaro. You won't be disappointed! Here are some of the things we loved about Panificio Il Forno di Gennaro: Delicious, authentic bread and traditional Lucanian products Warm and welcoming atmosphere Passionate and knowledgeable staff Commitment to using fresh, high-quality ingredients Overall, we had a fantastic experience at Panificio Il Forno di Gennaro. It's a must-visit for any bread lover visiting Matera! Maybe with me @mimmosmouthfuls
