Barsana Monastery is one of the most beautiful wooden monasteries in Maramures, originally dating back to the 18th century. The current church, however, was rebuilt in 1993 following the traditional Maramureș wooden architecture style and has since become one of Romania’s most visited monasteries. The older Wooden Church of Barsana, located nearby, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list as one of the “Wooden Churches of Maramures,” recognized for its outstanding craftsmanship and the way it reflects the deep faith and artistic heritage of the local people. Even from the courtyard, you’ll be stunned by the sense of peace and quiet that surrounds the monastery, beautifully enhanced by the vibrant gardens and the wooden craftsmanship of the church itself. On one side of the courtyard, you can see peacocks, some of the most elegant and colorful birds in the world, a sight that adds even more charm to this spiritual place. If you are in the area, taking 10–15 minutes of silence and reflection here will surely refresh your mind and soul.

One of the most beautiful places in Romania. The design is really unique and the views are amazing. A must place to visit during a trip to Maramureș

Barsana Monastery is absolutely breathtaking! The location is serene, surrounded by rolling hills and fresh mountain air, making it the perfect place for peace and reflection. The wooden architecture is stunning, with incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail in every carving. The gardens are beautifully maintained, and the whole atmosphere feels like stepping into a different world—calm, pure, and uplifting. The monks and staff are warm and welcoming, always ready to share the history and traditions of the place. Whether you come for spiritual reasons, cultural interest, or simply to enjoy the beauty, Barsana Monastery is an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!

Everithing about the place is pure love and harmony. Buildings, nature, flowers and the garden which takes soo much time and effort to maintaine, background music, history, and above all else the energy which is almost impossible to find in "normal" outside world...I planned to stay half an hour, I was there for 3 hours, just couldn't leave that beautiful place.

The place is simply stunning and beautiful, so so soooo gorgeous. When you’re inside, it feels like you’re in some elf’s village from lord of the rings or so, or, any other sort of unrealistic beauty, although everything is pretty real here, all wooden churches and houses, the garden and mountains around are amazing. At the bottom of the monastery complex you’ve got some snack kiosks and souvenir shops.
