Barcelona’s El Call Tour Revives the Legacy of the Medieval Jewish Quarter

A new cultural walking experience is offering visitors an in-depth exploration of the historic Jewish heritage of El Call, the medieval Jewish Quarter of Barcelona. The tour traces the rich history of a once-thriving community that played a vital role in the city’s intellectual and commercial life.

As participants move through narrow stone streets, they discover stories of scholars, poets, and merchants who shaped Jewish life in medieval Barcelona. The experience also addresses pivotal historical events, including the unrest of 1391, which profoundly altered the community and left a lasting impact on Catalan history.

The route connects key Gothic landmarks such as the Kings’ Palace, Barcelona Cathedral, and Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, linking these sites to the lived experiences of the people who once inhabited the quarter. A highlight of the visit is Casa Adret, a restored medieval home opened exclusively through the tour, showcasing archaeological remains and its current role as a cultural space.
