Kui Buri National Park, located in Thailand's Prachuap Khiri Khan province, is a remarkable sanctuary and one of the country’s best destinations for spotting wild Asian elephants in their natural habitat. With over 320 protected elephants roaming freely, visitors have an astonishing 99% chance of encountering these majestic creatures during their visit—an experience that feels both intimate and awe-inspiring. Alongside elephants, the park is also home to herds of gaurs (Indian bison), golden jackals, sambar deer, langurs, white-handed gibbons, wild boars, and Malay porcupines. Though rarer to spot, elusive species such as leopards, tigers, bantengs, dholes (Asian wild dogs), and Malay tapirs also inhabit the park’s dense forests, highlighting its vital role in wildlife conservation. Kui Buri's open savannas, waterholes, and salt licks provide ideal vantage points for ethical wildlife viewing, often from designated safari trucks accompanied by knowledgeable local rangers.
The park also boasts an impressive diversity of birdlife, with over 260 species recorded, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Daily sightings include herons circling elephant herds, as well as red junglefowl, Indochinese rollers, and Asian openbills. Rarer and more exotic avian species such as red-bearded bee-eaters, white-crowned hornbills, maroon woodpeckers, and spectacled spiderhunters can also be spotted by keen observers. Reptile enthusiasts will find interest in the park’s rich herpetofauna, with around 60 known reptile species, including red-headed kraits, Pope’s pit vipers, rough-necked monitor lizards, and Burmese green lizards. The forest landscape of Kui Buri is equally captivating, composed of dry and moist evergreen forests with species like Dipterocarpus tuberculatus, Hopea odorata, and Terminalia chebula, as well as various palms. This pristine ecosystem offers a rare glimpse into Thailand’s untamed wilderness, where wildlife thrives and nature reigns supreme.
