Embark on a journey that begins in Nizwa, the historic capital of Oman, where tradition and culture come alive at the bustling Nizwa Souq. As one of the largest markets in the country, it offers a vibrant array of goods—from fresh produce, fish, and meat to pottery, silver jewelry, handicrafts, and memorable souvenirs—all within beautifully preserved, traditional market halls. The blend of heritage and authenticity makes this stop a truly immersive cultural experience.
From there, we ascend to the cool heights of Jebel Akhdar, known as the Green Mountain, where we’ll explore ancient villages and terraced farms nestled in the mountains. This scenic walk offers the chance to interact with locals, learn about their way of life, and capture unforgettable moments with your camera. Depending on the season, you might stroll through fragrant rose gardens in March and visit a rosewater distillery, or in summer, enjoy fresh fruits like juicy pomegranates and grapes from the region’s fertile orchards.

This is the main fort of Nizwa city, which used to be the capital of Oman. Excellent tourist attraction spot. A great example of ancient Omani Architecture. View from the top is also amazing.

Very interesting. You’re allowed to walk around everywhere and check out all the rooms. A recommendation would be to include more furnishings to give a better feel of what the fort would have been like back in the day. We spent about an hour there over sunset, great view over Nizwa. Be sure to walk around the gardens where there are animals including camels and deer.

I loved it! Well organised exhibitions, the fort is well maintained and renovated. Compared to Bahla, I think Nizwa fort is such more informative and interactive. In the garden there are some animals, too. The entrance fee is 5 OMR.

The staff are very friendly. There are a few spots which have air conditioning but the rest is hot. We went in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and it was nice to have the fort almost to yourself. Might be good to get a tour guide if you’re interested in the history.

Nizwa Fort is a significant historical landmark that attracts many tourists eager to explore its rich history and impressive architecture. The nearby souq area is just a short walk away and is definitely worth visiting for its traditional shops, local crafts, and vibrant atmosphere. While the entry fee is slightly higher than expected, the experience of exploring the fort and its surroundings makes it well worth it.
