Viðey Ferry - from the Old Harbour

Viðey Island is a peaceful haven just minutes away from Reykjavík, easily reached by ferry from the Old Harbour or Skarfabakki pier. During summer, ferries run daily from both piers, while in winter, service is limited to weekends from Skarfabakki. From 1st June to 31st August, departures from the Old Harbour are available at 11:50 and 14:50, with return options at 11:30, 14:30, and 17:30. The short boat ride transports visitors to an island rich in history, natural beauty, and cultural significance. With its quiet paths and scenic views, Viðey is a perfect spot to experience Iceland’s unique flora and fauna, including over 150 types of vascular plants and vibrant birdlife. The Þórsnes peninsula is especially important as a protected breeding ground from 1st May to 1st July, where species like the eider duck and many migratory birds nest each year.

The island’s cultural highlights are equally captivating. It is home to the Imagine Peace Tower, a glowing monument created by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon, symbolizing a universal message of peace. Visitors can also explore historic landmarks like Viðey Church, the Old School House, Viðeyjarnaust Cabin, and enjoy refreshments at the charming Viðeyjarstofa Café. The island is formed by two parts—Heimaey and Vesturey—featuring dramatic coastal rock formations such as Virkisöfði and Eiðisbjarg.
