Colorado Heritage Journey Combines Wildlife Education, Steam Rail, and Mining History

A multi-experience excursion aboard the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad is offering visitors a combined celebration of Colorado’s natural heritage, wildlife, and mining history. Set against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, the program brings together scenic rail travel, educational wildlife encounters, and underground exploration.

The journey begins aboard the Georgetown Loop Railroad, a preserved steam railway that travels between Georgetown and Silver Plume through steep canyons and forested alpine terrain. Known for its dramatic engineering and historic significance, the route continues to operate restored steam locomotives that reflect Colorado’s mining-era transportation legacy.

A featured highlight of the experience is a wildlife education program presented by Nature’s Educators, a conservation-focused organization. Guests are introduced to native birds and reptiles through interactive demonstrations and flight exhibitions, offering insight into Colorado’s ecosystems and the importance of wildlife conservation.

The excursion also includes a guided visit to the Leavenworth Mountain silver mine, where visitors explore historic tunnels along the Hise Ore route. Inside, interpreters highlight geological formations and mining-era features such as mineral deposits, calcite structures, and preserved artifacts before guests return by steam train to complete the journey.
