A nice excursion to do during a visit to Sri Lanka. Their village tour is sweet and simple...very easily available in India and is still how many of us still love but nevertheless it's a great option for foreigners to understand the culture. You can start the tour in a tuk tuk or a bullock cart. We chose a tuk tuk because why to hurt animals unnecessarily? After that we reached the lake with the catamarans. We rode it for a short time and the people who took us around made a beautiful necklace out of lotus flower and a hat out of lotus leaves. Sweet gesture. We did tip them for this and felt it was a small thing from our end. Subsequently we went to a village josie where we were to eat their home cooked traditional food. Unfortunately we are vegetarian so couldn't try much of their food. But if you do eat non veg, I suppose giving it a try. A small buffet is kept with some herbal tea that's made from coriander seeds and jaggery. We then ground some husk to get rice and then ground that to get rice flour. This is something we've done in our households so it was known to us. After this we returned to the starting point of the village and went ahead to our next tourist spot. On the trail we did pick up some fruits that was a small berry that's often used in jams.

We loved it! It’s a nice first activity to do after we arrived. It was chill. You get to see amazing view of Sigiriya. Best part is the lunch spot. You see the locals cook and you get a chance to cook with them . The food was too good my taste buds were having a party.

Very "touristy", but quite nice. You go on a waggon pulled by buffalo, then a waggon pulled by a tractor, then a cute boat where they make you necklaces from lily pods. The best part is the meal at the hut with the very nice village woman.

We did the Village Tour in Sigiriya in October 2024, organized by our private driver, which was great because we knew the price upfront (33 € for two people, about 2 hours). The full package included a bullock cart ride, a peaceful boat ride across the lake, visiting a traditional village house, learning to cook the local way, enjoying the meal we prepared and finishing with a fun tuk-tuk ride. My boyfriend even got to drive the tuk-tuk! 😅 Although I didn’t enjoy the bullock cart ride because of the animals pulling it, the rest of the experience was absolutely perfect – unique, authentic, and truly memorable. The boat ride offered stunning scenery, and the cooking session felt very personal. Preparing traditional dishes from scratch and then sharing the meal was a highlight. 💡 Tip: Bring some cash for tips and book through a trusted guide or driver to avoid overpaying and tourist scams. Overall, a cultural experience I highly recommend if you want to discover rural Sri Lankan life and enjoy real homemade food.

The Sigiriya village trip is an affordable and memorable way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and traditional lifestyle of a rural Sri Lankan village. The journey begins with a relaxing bullock cart ride through the countryside, followed by a Bull Cart transfer to a scenic lake. There, you’ll board a catamaran boat and gently glide across the water, enjoying panoramic views of Sigiriya Rock, the surrounding mountains, lush greenery, and occasional wildlife sightings. A local boatman will craft a handmade cap, necklace, and flower bouquet from fresh river blooms — a charming gesture that adds a personal touch to your journey. The tour continues with a traditional cooking demonstration hosted by a village woman, offering insight into age-old culinary techniques. You’ll also get to experience rural activities like drumming and rice preparation, and even meet her family. It’s customary and appreciated to leave a small tip as a token of gratitude. A tuk-tuk will then take you back to your starting point, concluding the experience. This simple yet meaningful tour offers a wonderful opportunity to support the local community while enjoying a peaceful escape from modern-day stress. Please note that English may be limited among the villagers, but their warmth and hospitality shine through regardless.
