Canyon Lake in the Texas Hill Country is a destination known for its natural beauty outdoor recreation and rich history. Surrounded by rolling hills and clear blue waters the lake attracts visitors who enjoy boating fishing swimming and relaxing in nature. Canyon Lake was formed in the mid twentieth century when the Guadalupe River was dammed as part of a flood control and water conservation project led by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The construction of Canyon Dam began in the 1950s and was completed in 1964 creating the large reservoir now known as Canyon Lake.

Covering more than eight thousand acres and stretching along nearly eighty miles of shoreline the lake quickly became a popular location for water sports anglers and nature enthusiasts. Beneath the peaceful surface of the lake lies an intriguing part of local history. Before the reservoir was created the valley was home to small communities established by early settlers including German immigrants who arrived in the nineteenth century. When the dam was built and the valley flooded several towns and structures were submerged leaving traces of these historic settlements resting quietly beneath the waters of Canyon Lake.
