Palazzo Colonna is a historic palace in Rome whose construction spanned five centuries, resulting in a fascinating mix of architectural styles. Both the exterior and interior reflect different epochs and artistic influences, making the palace a unique example of historical evolution. From 1300 to 1500, the building served as a family fortress, demonstrating the strength and prestige of the Colonna family. In 1417 Oddone Colonna was elected pope and took the name Martin V. He made the palace his residence from 1420 until his death in 1431, turning it into an important center of political and cultural activity in Rome.
During his residence, Pope Martin V planned and executed a ten-year program of cultural, urban, and administrative renewal, helping to restore the city after the difficult period of the Avignon captivity and the Western Schism. The palace survived the sack of Rome in 1527 by the troops of Emperor Charles V, remaining intact while much of the city was damaged. Its survival was largely due to the good relations between the Colonna family and the Empire. Today visitors can explore the historic halls, admire the art and architecture, and learn about the important role of the palace and its inhabitants in shaping Rome’s history. Palazzo Colonna stands as a testament to the power, culture, and influence of one of Rome’s most important noble families.
