An hour's drive from Yerevan takes us to the iconic Khor Virap Monastery, dramatically set in the Ararat plain and located just about 100 meters from the sealed Turkish-Armenian border. This historical site, surrounded by barbed wire fencing and guarded by Russian military posts, offers breathtaking views of Mount Ararat and holds deep religious significance as the place where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned. The atmosphere here is rich with history, spirituality, and stunning natural scenery.

Continuing southeast, our first stop is the legendary Geghard Monastery, also known as the Monastery of the Spear. This UNESCO World Heritage site is partially carved into a mountainside and is said to have once housed the spear that wounded Christ, making it one of Christianity’s most treasured relic sites. We then head to Garni village, where we’ll enjoy a traditional lunch at a local family-run restaurant, including freshly baked lavash—Armenia’s famous flatbread made in a tandoor. Afterward, we visit the Garni Temple, a rare example of Graeco-Roman architecture in Armenia, believed to be dedicated to the sun god Mithra. If we're lucky, we may even catch an impromptu choral performance by local Armenian visitors, adding a magical touch to the experience.
