Historic Alleyways

Discover the hidden history of Washington DC on this one and a half hour walking tour through the Blagden Alley and Naylor Court Historic District. The alleyways, originally designed as part of city planning, became safe spaces for escaped enslaved people and economically disadvantaged residents to live and build supportive communities. While officials once labeled the alleys as dangerous and unsanitary, they were in fact vital areas where neighbors sustained each other and created security. The tour offers an in depth look at the social and architectural history of these unique urban spaces.

The tour begins at 909 M Street NW and ends in Blagden Alley, with a half way stop at La Colombe Coffee for a bathroom break and optional refreshments. Guests will explore the remaining intact historic alleyways, learning about architectural details, the historic role of the alleys as homes for DC's working class, and the vibrant murals created by local artists, businesses, and restaurants. This wheelchair accessible tour is suitable for ages two to ninety nine and provides a fascinating combination of cultural, social, and visual history. Participants are encouraged to arrive early as tours depart on time and to dress appropriately for an outdoor walking experience.
