The Homestead Cheesemaking Class at Jireh Hills Family Homestead is a two hour hands-on experience designed for all ages. Participants learn the process of creating farm fresh cheeses, yogurt, and kefir from scratch using milk from goats and Jersey cows on the homestead. The class includes a step-by-step lesson in milking goats, culturing, cutting, and seasoning fresh goat feta and farmhouse cheddar. Guests also learn how to culture and set fresh goat’s milk kefir. A detailed handout guide is included to help students recreate the cheeses and yogurt at home. The class encourages interaction among up to eight participants, making it a social and educational experience suitable for families and small groups. Children under five can attend for free, and a portion of the class proceeds supports a local summer program focused on regenerative agriculture. Classes run year-round and can be indoors or outdoors depending on weather. After the session, participants may add on a campfire and marshmallow roast for extra fun and farm connection.
This class emphasizes practical skills, healthful living, and understanding the journey of milk from farm to table. Students gain knowledge of dairy handling, cheese-making techniques, and flavoring methods while exploring the farm and meeting the goats. By engaging with the animals and learning traditional cheesemaking, participants develop appreciation for sustainable farming practices and healthy homemade food. The experience blends education, hands-on learning, and enjoyment of the pastoral setting. Families leave with both practical skills and memorable interactions with farm animals.
