Discover Herdade do Freixo on an immersive half-day visit, where tradition, sustainability, and history come together in the heart of the Alentejo. Your morning begins with an authentic journey through the Alentejo montado, a remarkable ecosystem of cork oaks and holm oaks. Here, you'll learn about the centuries-old practice of cork harvesting and its vital role in the region’s economy and environmental stewardship. The tour continues with a visit to the farm’s animals and greenhouses, where sustainable agricultural practices are upheld in harmony with natural cycles. This connection to the land is deepened by a stop at a prehistoric cromlech and a carefully reconstructed Neolithic village, offering insight into the lives of the first sedentary communities in the region.
To enhance the experience, guests have the option to enjoy a traditional Alentejo lunch on the farm, prepared with fresh, local ingredients and rooted in time-honored recipes—subject to availability. This unique visit weaves together nature, heritage, and gastronomy, giving you a well-rounded understanding of Alentejo’s cultural identity and commitment to preserving its rich rural legacy.

Our stay at Herdade de Matinha was one of the true highlights of our time in Portugal. We loved the peaceful, green surroundings, the thoughtful focus on sustainability, the relaxed atmosphere, and the delicious meals served at breakfast and dinner. All of our interactions with the staff were great and our room was comfortable and offered a lovely view of the property and surrounding hills—perfect for a restful night’s sleep. While the Portuguese coast is stunning, the walking and hiking here were exactly what we were hoping for. The Rota Vicentina trail passes right through the property, leading all the way down to the coast—a route we highly recommend. And for beach lovers, there are plenty of beautiful options just a short drive away. This is the kind of place you find yourself wanting to return to again and again. Highly recommended!

I feel my shoulders dropping - with one deep breath in and out - I know I am at home. That’s the feeling for me when I go to Herdade da Matinha. There must be something in the scent, but it only takes a few minutes and I’m in total calm mode. If you want a good rest - this is where you need to be. Also the restaurant is run by two brothers and sons of Alfredo (the founder and resident artist). Love the kitchen (I hear it used to be accessible to the hotel guests in the past - oh how I wish that could return :)) And the food is very tasty. It goes into a Portuguese traditional direction, but still with modern ingredients. Last time I went I loved the Tomato Gazpacho and the Oxtail Croquettes! Also currently they have a special lunch every Sunday.

A magical, quiet and relaxing place with great service and food. After two days of biking, we stopped here for two nights to relax and take a day off from biking. It was just what we needed. Seriously away from the beaten path. The beautiful coastline of Portugal and a perfect beach is about a 2.5 mile hike from the hotel and well worth it.

Fantastic gem of a hotel in the middle of some of the most lush forestry in Alentejo. Off the beaten track yet full of warm welcomes and delicious food, not to mention three pools including one reserved for adults only, it is everything a Hyatt or Marriott is not - intimate, authentic and slightly wild. If homogenized hospitality is what you are after, there are many hotel brands catering to those needs. Herdade da Matinha is not. It is full of soul, charisma and charm. It may not always be to perfection, but it will leave you with more memories than any of the plasticized chain hotels will. Our family will be back for sure, this was one of the highlights of our 2.5 week trip to Portugal and the one place that left our 7 year old in tears when we had to leave.

Went to Portugal to focus on a creative project, looking for a calm atmosphere. I was not disappointed - Herdade da Matinha offered exactly the experience I was looking for. I went there during the low season in January. There were few to no other guests - they really made an effort to make sure I had everything I needed, beginning with detailed descriptions on how to get there to organizing a trip to watch the sunset. I had great weather, did a few hikes in the surrounding nature and enjoyed the silence. Overall, it was just stunning. In total, I spent 7 days. My room was spacious and nicely designed and there are many cozy common areas. There is also a restaurant serving great food. You should know that there are dogs running around freely in the property - they are very cute and make the place feel like a home. Can only recommend staying here!
