Professional Raft Guide Training Program Launches on Trinity River

An immersive training program on the Trinity River is offering aspiring river professionals a structured pathway into commercial whitewater rafting. Designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike, the course combines classroom learning with intensive on-river practice. Participants are introduced to the core responsibilities of a professional raft guide while experiencing one of Northern California’s most dynamic river environments.

The program emphasizes hands-on skill development, including raft preparation, rigging techniques, paddle steering commonly known as stick guiding, and coordinated team navigation through rapids. Trainees learn to read river features such as eddies, holes, and currents while practicing how to select safe and efficient routes through moving water. Additional instruction covers swimming in rapids, recovering from rocks, and safely handling unexpected river situations.

Training sessions are primarily conducted on the Pigeon Point (Trinity River section), with opportunities for more advanced whitewater experiences depending on river conditions. The curriculum also includes essential safety practices such as rescue techniques, rope skills, hand signal communication, and flipping overturned rafts. Participants gain exposure to real-world guiding scenarios, including delivering safety briefings and preparing river-style meals.
