Discover Pittsburgh’s rich history on a two hour Tales from the Past paddle along the Allegheny River. This beginner friendly outing is perfect for all ages, starting at our Downtown location on Fort Duquesne Boulevard. Trip leaders provide an instructional and safety briefing on land before guiding participants along the calm river waters. As you paddle, you’ll hear stories about Pittsburgh’s past, learning about the city’s bygone eras, historical landmarks, and the significance of its rivers. Children under thirteen ride in tandem kayaks with adults, ensuring safety while everyone enjoys the experience.

The route covers approximately one and a half to two miles, traveling down the Allegheny River to the Point where the three rivers meet and returning to the Venture Outdoors kayak dock near the Convention Center. Participants will enjoy the expertise of local paddle historian Sam Soergel, who has over a decade of experience on Pittsburgh’s rivers. This event runs rain or shine, so guests should dress appropriately, wear quick drying clothing, and bring closed toe shoes. A headlamp is recommended for night paddles, and water is suggested to stay hydrated. Rental kayaks, paddles, and life jackets are included for those who do not bring their own, and all personal kayaks are inspected for seaworthiness before use.
