Class - Beginner River Paddle - Downtown

Experience a guided beginner river paddle in Downtown Pittsburgh and explore the Allegheny River with confidence. This two-hour class is perfect for anyone aged thirteen and older who wants to practice kayaking in a safe, supervised environment. Launching from the downtown location, participants will enjoy scenic river views while learning the basics of paddling, steering, and river navigation. Our trained Kayak Pittsburgh Excursionists provide step-by-step guidance on equipment use, safety procedures, and techniques to enhance your skills on moving water.

The pace and distance of the paddle are tailored to the group, covering approximately one to one and a half miles. No prior kayaking experience is required, though prior practice on calm waters is encouraged for confidence. Participants must arrive fifteen minutes early for check-in and dress appropriately for the weather, as trips proceed rain or shine. Comfortable closed-toe shoes, water, and quick-dry clothing are recommended. Rental kayaks, paddles, and PFDs are available, or you may bring your own non-motorized kayak in seaworthy condition for inspection by staff. Ticket sales close twenty-four hours before the event.
