Learn essential flatwater rescue skills in this three hour course at North Park designed for kayakers aged thirteen and older. This intermediate level program focuses on safety and practical techniques, including self rescues, assisted rescues, and towing, both on land and in water. Experienced Kayak Pittsburgh Excursionists certified by the American Canoe Association guide the class, offering expert instruction aligned with ACA Level 1 curriculum. Participants will practice key swimming skills and familiarize themselves with important rescue equipment in a controlled environment on North Park Lake.
The course emphasizes hands on skill building rather than distance paddling, with exercises conducted near the same area of the lake. All necessary rescue gear is provided, though participants are encouraged to bring a personal kayak if available, ensuring it is in seaworthy condition. Attendees should dress for the weather in non cotton clothing that dries quickly, wear comfortable closed toe shoes, and bring water. Arrival fifteen minutes before start time is recommended to ensure smooth check in. By attending, participants acknowledge they are physically able to participate in the activity. This course is an excellent opportunity for kayakers to increase confidence, improve water safety skills, and learn essential rescue techniques under professional supervision.
