The three-day canoe tour from Gießen to Weilburg offers a scenic journey along the Lahn River ideal for beginners, families, and groups. The tour starts at the second weir in Gießen, close to the main train station, with parking available nearby. On the first day, paddlers travel fourteen kilometers to Wetzlar, passing three boat slides and two self-service locks. The historic town of Wetzlar offers charming streets, restaurants, and bars for an evening stroll. The second day covers another fourteen kilometers to the Solms Schohleck campsite, navigating three more locks and enjoying views of Braunfels Castle and surrounding landscapes. This campsite also offers tipis for overnight stays, adding a special experience to the journey. On the final day, participants paddle fifteen kilometers from Solms to Weilburg, enjoying the lively Lahn River, ancient beech forests, and scenic rest areas such as Selters with its traditional beer garden. Along the way, historic half-timbered houses and a fourteenth-century castle ruin enrich the tour. The adventure ends at the Weilburg canoe station next to the shipping tunnel, a unique landmark in the region.
Life jackets are mandatory for children under twelve and non-swimmers. Meals, accommodation, and return transportation are not included, allowing flexibility for personal planning. All endpoints are close to train stations, making the Lahn Valley Railway convenient for return travel. Tours run in all weather conditions, so rain gear is recommended. Boats should reach the destination no later than six pm. The tour combines exercise, relaxation, and cultural exploration along one of Germany’s most picturesque rivers, offering both natural beauty and historic highlights.
