Ipoh, the capital city of Perak, is situated by the Kinta River, approximately 180 km north of Kuala Lumpur and 123 km southeast of George Town, Penang. Originally a small village, Ipoh grew rapidly in the 1880s after vast tin deposits were discovered nearby, becoming the second largest town in the Federated Malay States by 1895. Though declared a city in 1988, Ipoh faced decline following the depletion of its tin resources and the collapse of tin prices in the 1970s. Recently, the city’s popularity has surged as an international tourist destination, thanks to efforts preserving its British colonial-era architecture. Known for its clean streets, Ipoh boasts stunning natural attractions like limestone hills and caves housing Buddhist temples. It has also earned the nickname “Hipster Capital of Malaysia.” This tour includes visits to famous limestone caves, the Ipoh Old Railway Station, Kellie’s Castle, and Concubine Street, with an opportunity to enjoy local Ipoh cuisine in Old Town at your own expense, featuring specialties like chicken rice, dim sum, taro puff, egg tarts, and the famous Ipoh white coffee.

Thanks John for taking us around Ipoh and showing us the mouth-watering treats! You’ve been most patient and accommodating through our ride to Cameron Highlands and back. Allowing us to stop along the way and getting lunch. It’s been incredible riding with you 😃

Good tour, at their recommendation, we deleted the old town section (as we were staying in that part of town) and added the spectacular Gua Tempurang caves and the Kinta Tin Mining Museum. The famous cave temples were of course a key part of the tour. We weren't that excited about visiting the mining museum but as it happened it was actually very useful to understand the history of the area and more broadly the influx of Chinese miners in the 19th century that became a crucial part of the development of Peranakan identity and Nyonya food. Our tour guide, John, was very informative on a wide range of topics including the anti-British national liberation war (or communist insurgency depending on your perspective...) and the 'new villages' outside Ipoh (450 villages were created in Malaysia to reduce support for the guerillas - basically 'relatively benign' British internment camps). We were very interested in this history - however, if we hadn't been, we have no doubt, John would be fully alive to this and changed the focus accordingly. We also dropped into a local soy sauce factory that was interesting and the aromas spectacular. All in all a great trip and one that added substantially to our experience of Ipoh and more broadly, Malaysia. Thanks John, Mazni and Cecelia (an intern who accompanied us on the day).

We had a great experience with Ipoh Secret Tours in the Cameron Highlands. I would highly recommend them. We booked the day with Juan, who was not only a skilled driver on the narrow and tricky roads but also really knowledgeable and friendly! Thank you so much Juan, we had a really great time!

My group consists of 2 adults and 3 seniors. John is both our tour guide and driver for the day. Our first time to Ipoh. Very informative journey.. We definitely got to know Ipoh better through John. The itinerary was good, covers many main Ipoh attractions. Pace was just nice, non stressful neither was it too rush. If you are a first timer visiting Ipoh, would recommend that you engage Ipoh Secrets!

Highly recommend booking a tour with Ipoh Secrets! John is a great guide with lots of stories and interesting facts. He is very flexible as well, which was great because I was struggling with health issues during the first part of our tour... He dropped us back off at our hotel, and offered to stay on call so we could let him know in case I recovered for the afternoon. I am very glad I did, because John picked us up again to do some highlights of the itinerary. I appreciated how he took us to a stall with some traditional dessert (while keeping an eye on dietary requirements) and took us for some local food shopping as well. Thank you for giving us such an enjoyable day in Ipoh, John! :)
