The Cortile della Pigna is the upper courtyard of Bramante’s former Cortile del Belvedere, now enclosed by Vatican Museum wings. At the north end a large semicircular niche contains the Fontana della Pigna: a Roman bronze pinecone about four metres high on a stepped marble base, flanked by bronze peacocks. The pinecone originally functioned as a fountain ornament in imperial Rome, later stood in the atrium of Old Saint Peter’s, and was moved here in the early seventeenth century. In the centre of the courtyard stands Arnaldo Pomodoro’s bronze sculpture Sfera con sfera (installed in 1990), aligned on the main axis. Paved areas, simple planting and balustrades frame views of the fountain, the museum façades and the dome of St Peter’s.
One of the first areas you visit on a tour of the Vatican, it is quite tranquil and quite before you get into the throng of the museums and the wall of people. The golden ball in the centre is incredible to see as it continuously spins in place. The pinecone framed by the building is a really nice sight. Great place to start a tour or walk around the Vatican halls.
