The Base Las Torres trek is one of the most iconic hikes in Torres del Paine National Park, offering both challenge and stunning rewards. The journey begins with a steady zigzag ascent through the scenic Asencio Valley, a stretch that takes around 90 minutes to complete. Along the way, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views, including the pristine waters of Lake Nordenskjöld glimmering below. As you climb higher, the imposing presence of Monte Almirante Nieto comes into view, its snow-covered peaks soaring to 2,670 meters above sea level. The path meanders beneath its former glaciers, offering a dramatic backdrop of rugged Patagonian wilderness.
Throughout the trek, your guide will ensure plenty of breaks to rest and take in the scenery. While the trail gradually descends at times, it also rises sharply by as much as 200 feet in sections as it hugs the mountainside and parallels the rushing Asencio River below. After several hours of steady trekking through varied terrain, the group will arrive at the Chilean refuge — a perfect place for a well-earned break and a chance to appreciate the peaceful, remote beauty of the Patagonian landscape.
