Saqqara has a completely different energy from the more famous Giza plateau, and that’s exactly what makes it so special. The moment you arrive, you feel like you’ve stepped deeper into Egypt’s ancient past—quieter, more expansive, and full of discoveries that haven’t been overwhelmed by crowds. The Step Pyramid of Djoser is breathtaking up close, not just for its age but for the sense of innovation it represents as the world’s earliest large-scale stone monument. Walking around the complex, you’ll find beautifully carved tombs, serene desert views, and a peaceful atmosphere that lets you take your time and really absorb the history around you. It’s a place where you can wander, reflect, and appreciate the layers of civilization that once thrived here. If you’re exploring Egypt, Saqqara is absolutely worth the detour—it offers depth, authenticity, and a sense of wonder that stays with you.

You must not be in a hurry when you come here. There is a vast space to visit and it is better to do it calmly; you have to walk between one historical monument and the other. This place starts your imagination when you try to frame what you see in a scenario of what and how things were done in those ancient times. Death was more important than life because life was temporary, but death instead brought eternity to those who knew what things to do and how to do them in the right way, to guarantee the passage into the afterlife and the possibility of a return. On the site, excavations are still continuing today; who knows what else we will discover soon? Some constructions are made of stone, others of mud bricks that have wonderfully arrived until our days. On the walls and on the steles, there are representations of daily life with all its actions of fishing, agriculture, and even punishment for failure to pay taxes. Furthermore, various rites of worship and offerings to the gods are represented. Also, the relationships of sweet affection between some royal characters are very clearly highlighted. Naturally, everything that could be taken away has been removed and transported to various museums (statues, sarcophagi, objects), but the place makes you feel the atmosphere; it shows you the general image of a complex so large and ancient. There are also many places to take beautiful photos. Many professional photographers are there. Attention to the workers!!! They ask for money in an incredible way without any shame! If they open a door for you or show you with a finger which direction to go, that's it, you are in debt! Simply answer: "I paid for the ticket." With us, one of the workers (without having helped or explained anything to us) was very insistent. When my husband refused the tip, he continued to grumble behind us: "Ok no problem, no money, no money yes? Ok no money". Then I turned around and told him everything I thought: "I worked hard for the money I have and I paid a price for this ticket that is not small, so what money do I owe you now?". Then the worker apologized and disappeared. Be careful, give tips when you feel like doing it, do not allow others to manipulate you — you are already paying for tickets, you owe them nothing extra!

Best to go with a private guide that goes at the pace you want. My group rushed through while I would have liked to explore more. I did appreciate guides explaining the purposes of the different area. There are quite a few signs but didn't really explain as much as I would like. It isn't clear what is a reconstruction versus antiquities. There are a lot of sellers that are best ignored.

Sakkara was the first necropolis in Egypt. Older than the pyramids coming in at 4,600 years old. The ancient architectural buffet consists of sixteen pyramids, because apparently the Egyptians were testing out every possible design before committing to Giza. The Djoser pyramid lives here and it is definitely worth a visit. This is way less crowded than the pyramids and I enjoyed it.

Saqqara was Amazing! I advise everyone to go here, not just Giza Pyramids. Saqqara is a huge area to visit, and you need also a driver to go to other places. You can touch history with your own hands ❤️🇪🇬 You can buy tickets there, no much queue. I went at Monday morning.
