Experience the history and grandeur of River Road plantations while traveling from your hotel to explore some of the most iconic estates along the Mississippi. We begin with an introduction at your hotel, then journey approximately one hour upriver to a French Colonial-style plantation. Along the way, you’ll learn about the “townhouses” many plantation families maintained in New Orleans for business and Mardi Gras, as well as the lives of the enslaved people whose labor built the wealth and splendor of these homes. Your plantation tour will be guided by the estate’s own knowledgeable docents, offering an immersive experience and an intimate look at life along the river.
Discover the unique character of each plantation: Oak Alley with its famous corridor of live oaks, Whitney Plantation dedicated to telling the stories of the enslaved, Destrehan Plantation with daily demonstrations of historical skills, and Laura Plantation, a Creole estate run by three generations of women whose memoirs bring history to life. Private transportation ensures a comfortable ride, and along the way, dialogue and questions are encouraged to deepen your understanding. The drive itself is approximately one hour each way, making the total experience around four hours, depending on which estates you choose to visit.
