We were totally delighted with this experience. We chose the 6pm session late January. The guide, the film beforehand, which provided context and the actual viewing was excellent. We were lucky enough to see several 'teenagers' in flight and a group in party mode! Very reasonably priced for a unique experience. I managed to capture this albatross in flight through the viewing glass. These are extraordinary birds. Do it! ps: please pay money rather than watch from a 'free' vantage. All funds support the non-profit charity Otago Peninsula Trust in their conservation work, habitat restoration and predator control at Taiaroa Head.
Asta our tour guide was on our wave length with great information and conversation..my sister and I loved every minute of the tour..Asta was very considerate..waiting for us and taking us on different roads, providing a variety of scenery. We had a lot of fun and it was a fabulous tour..highly recommend
Worth it for wildlife conservation and the knowledgeable guides. Go on a windy day to see the albatross flying. I thought the Royal Albatross Center was fantastic. I’ve heard some people say it’s not worth it for the money because you view the albatross far away through glass, but I had a great time anyway. I also like that the money goes toward the work they do at the center (which is a non-profit). We went in mid-December, which is nesting season. We booked in advance which I would recommend. On our way into the center for our tour we saw lots of baby gulls, which was very cute. The tour itself included a short video about the albatross and then a small walk up a hill to the viewing room. The ones we saw nesting were a little far away, but everyone is provided binoculars. And if you’re lucky, you will catch some flying. We saw a few because it was a windy day. They got close enough for us to really see the full wingspan. The guide we had was also very knowledgeable. It was a worthwhile experience.
